Project Coordinator, Consultant

Ellie Bui is a recent graduate from the University of California, Irvine (UCI) with a B.S. in Biological Sciences. She started out as a Game Designer and Researcher, then was promoted to be the Biological Design Producer and Head Producer. During the past two years, Ellie has learned and enjoyed her experience working with other members from various disciplines. Working closely with members in various departments, she is eager to see the final product and how useful it can be in improving the learning experience of the players. She is also interested in seeing the efficacy of team-working in educating members about another field with which they were not familiar before joining the project. Ellie is excited to see the future of similar concepts being applied to science, medical, and health education to ensure the accessibility of accurate and easy-to-understand information to all communities.

Hayden Poulain

Hayden Poulain

Head Producer

Hayden Poulain is a senior in Public Health Science at the University of California, Irvine. He initially came into the university as an engineering major before realizing his passion for the biological sciences. One of his first classes of his new major was with Dr. Brad Hughes. Here he learned about the research team and quickly went to work. Hayden helped design mini-games, VR mechanics, and general level pacing, while researching different pathogens, the vaccine creation process, and important laboratory techniques an aspiring scientist can expect to use. He even went on to assume a head producer position in the project. In the future, Hayden plans to attend graduate school with a focus on epidemiology to predict the spread of disease and prevent such a thing from happening, just like the player in the game.

Amy Li

Amy Li

Head Producer

Amy Li is a senior in Cognitive Science at the University of California, Irvine. Previously, she had two years of game production and design experience and currently works as the art and audio Strike Manager of UCI’s Video Game Development Club. In the Patient Zero game project, she initially worked as an audio designer. Not long, she got promoted to the audio producer and then head producer shortly after due to her leadership experiences and skills. By contributing, she not only hopes to inform the community about epidemiology in order to prevent future outbreaks like COVID-19 but more so to build an immersive VR game that will provide future generations fun and engaging educational experiences.

2D Art Producer

Alexa Rizo is a senior majoring in Studio Arts at UCI and is the current 2D art producer for the Patient Zero team. As a 2D artist, she collaborates with her fellow team members in order to create various art assets which’ll build on the game’s immersive experience. Outside of the team, she also participates in UCI’s Video Game Development Club as a member of the art department. With a passion in both game development and art, she hopes to improve on her skills and experience in order to pursue a future career in the video game industry.

Deric Chang is a junior majoring in Biological sciences with a specialization in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of California, Irvine and the Writing producer for Patient Zero VR.  Outside of research Deric is part of on-campus organizations like Pilipinx Pre-Health Undergraduate Student Organization, Zot Med UCI, Self Care UCI, and as well as Circle K. With a passion to spread knowledge and to give back to the community in which he actively is involved in.
 At the end of the day, Deric hopes to see this game come into fruition and hopes to see it help those who gain from it.

Jason Iino is a fourth year Computer Game Science major at the University of California, Irvine.  He is a game designer and programmer on the Patient Zero team.  Jason joined the team in hopes of gaining experience in game development and working on a larger team.  Jason is currently a member of UCI’s Video Game Development Club.  In his spare time, he enjoys golfing, drawing, competing in game tournaments, and creating games in Unity.

Ariana Mertz is a Computer Game Science graduate of the University of California, Irvine and alumni of the Video Game Development Club at UCI. As a sound designer for Patient Zero, she mixes and produces audio assets for various sound effects heard in-game. She works to effectively immerse players in the game through sound, and has a passion for all things audio.

Victoria Winn is a junior majoring in Computer Game Science at the University of California, Irvine. She is now the programming producer for Patient Zero, after programming on the team herself. Patient Zero combines her interests in game development, education, and virtual reality. She also serves as the Production Director and Project Manager for the Video Game Development Club at UCI.

Madison Komonchak is a third-year Game Art Major at Laguna College of Art and Design located in Laguna Beach, California. She is one of the 2D Artists under Patient Zero and specializes in creating 2D assets for the game. She has joined the project to gain experience and help create a visually informative learning experience.

Daniel Cabrera is a senior at UCI majoring in Software Engineering. He is a programmer for the Patient Zero project, combining his passion for video games and software development to help bring the game to life. Daniel is new to video game development and hopes to begin his journey into the field with Patient Zero. Through his contributions he looks to progress his own skills and develops a VR game that will help future students in their own learning.

Abdalla Talaat is a senior in 3D environmental and props in Laguna college of art with his main focus on Fantasy. Despite mainly focusing on fantasy, branching out to Sci-fi isn’t a difficult task for him with three years of experience in modeling. 

Abdalla is passionate about the first game as he will contribute to (Patient Zero) he is eager to produce efficient and eye-catching assets in his first game, he hopes that his contributions and effort will harness his personal 3D skills and expand his artistic capabilities.

Garrison Finley is a senior in Informatics with a specialization in Human-Computer Interaction at the University of California, Irvine and UX/UI Designer for Patient Zero VR. Garrison’s interest in UX started in high school where he often stayed up late, learning how to design products and interfaces for those with unique needs. Since then, his passion for human-centered design has seen him doing a variety of work at places like Oregon State University’s Dynamic Robotics Lab and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Garrison has also been an active member of UCI’s Video Game Development Club where he’s served as Director of UX.

David Organista is a senior majoring in Biological Sciences at the University of California, Irvine. He is under the departments for audio and writing for the Patient Zero VR project and enjoys the integration of media into a learning process as he finds the current methods of teaching not fun, as he enjoys coming up with creative ways to turn a boring concept into an entertaining showcase such as this project. When not focused on working on this project, David manages the Running Club at UCI as the Treasurer and volunteers at the UCI medical center where he hopes to become a nurse there one day after grad school.

Ashley currently holds a B.S. in biology and is aiming to attend a graduate school. As a 2D artist for Patient Zero, she collaborates with other departments to create 2D art assets that contribute to the player’s immersive in-game experience, such as patient reports, textbooks, and tutorial diagrams; she is also an active member of the research, writing, and game design departments. She does graphic design as a hobby and some of her art has been featured by UCI organizations like The Scribe, The Patient Project, and New Forum.

Jorge Torres is a Senior majoring in Computer Game Science at the University of California, Irvine. He is one of the 3D artists for Patient Zero VR, which combines his interest in game development and reality. He serves as one of the Art Officers for the Video Game Development Club at UCI. Jorge aims to learn coding and art skills to become a game developer.

Thao Dinh is a senior majoring in Public Health Science attending the University of California, Irvine and taking on research and 2d art roles in the Patient Zero VR team. The research piqued her interest because the project was an intriguing mix of game development and education that involves both her passions in art and the biological sciences. Thao aims to apply her artistic and graphic design skills to her area of study and career.

Hung Bui is a second year Computer Game Science major at University of California, Irvine, with a dual passion in both programming and the arts. Hung has a solid background in music and 2D semirealistic art and hopes to integrate his artistic skills as a valuable asset to the games he helps create. Viewing programming as a medium to express creative ideas, he strives to create beautiful, immersive experiences for players. He has programmed and produced art for multiple solo and collaborative projects in Unity and Pygame before joining Patient Zero. Exhilirated to program and create 3D art for this project, he aspires for the finished video game to be educational, impactful, and of course — fun!

Daniel Boghossian is a second-year student at UCI, currently studying Computer Science and Game Development. He has grown up with a strong passion for video games, always wanting to be able to spread the joy he received as a child while playing games, to others around the world. He has worked on and coded multiple Unity projects before but this will be his first collaborative team project. He is diving in headfirst excited to learn new techniques, meet new people, and create an amazing video game.
